The Burning House

The Burning house is a blog full of submitted photos based on the following question:

'If your house was burning, what would you take with you? It's a conflict between what's practical, valuable and sentimental. What you would take reflects your interests, background and priorities. Think of it as an interview condensed into one question.

It's a really interesting concept so I thought I would give it a go and take a photo of what I would save.

 From left to right:
  • Lips Mirror - This was a gift from my Dad for my 14th Birthday.  It used to hang on the wall of his Pub and I just loved it so much that he took it down and gave it to me.  It was by an artist but I don't have their name.
  • Bird cage - This was a gift from my boyfriend for my 27th Birthday.  We spotted it in an antiques shop on Holiday in Topsham, Devon and I knew I had to have it.  I don't know how old it is.
  • Liberty Suitcase - This was also a gift for my 27th Birthday but from my Mum.  I love it so much and it reminds me of her.
  • Ceramic Cat - I bought this in the same antiques store in Topsham.  It's eyebrows have half peeled of so it looks really sinister but it reminds me of the fun we had on that Holiday.
  • Diana Camera - I rarely use this camera but I bought it to take photos on a trip to Bath with my boyfriend.  I never got the photos processed as medium format  processing is mega bucks but I love it because I remember the trip from just looking at the camera.
  • Shoes - If the house is burning down you need shoes and these are my favourites.  They were from Topshop last year.
  • Rings - The rings that you can hardly see were all gifts from my Mother, sister and boyfriend so all hold sentimental value.
  • Klaus Haapaniemi book - This was a gift from my friend Alice and I find it really inspirational.  His pictures are stunning.
  • J H Lynch print - I found this print in a junk shop when I lived in Brighton.  I had wanted one for years and I found this one face down in a dusty corner.  It was meant to be.
  • Wool and needles.  I think this is self explanatory,
  • Yoshitomo Nara ashtray - This was a gift from my sister for my 22nd Birthday.  Yoshitomo Nara is one of my favourite artists.
From doing this I have realised that most of my treasured possessions are gifts from loved ones.  I don't own any family heirlooms and have nothing of my Grandparents belongings which makes me really sad.  I would do anything to own something that belonged to my Grandad.

This is such an interesting and enlightening exercise.  You should do it and show me the results.

Thank you. I love my bird cage. I would love to know its history.
I wish I had more interesting things to put in the photograph like old photos of my family or antique jewellery. Maybe one day I will acquire those things. You should do it! x
